Low-Temperature Carbon Steel: What A333 and A420 Actually Guarantee
Impact testing, test temperature and marking requirements that decide whether low-temperature material is acceptable on site.

The role of impact testing
ASTM A333 Gr. 6 pipe and A420 WPL6 fittings are impact tested at -45 degrees C as standard. Gr. 3 and WPL3 extend that to -101 degrees C.
If the project design temperature sits between these points, the specification should state the required test temperature rather than relying on the grade alone.
Fittings are the common failure point
Fittings are formed and heat treated after the parent pipe is made, so their impact performance must be demonstrated on the finished component, not inherited from the starting material.
Ask for the fitting heat treatment record together with the impact test certificate; the two together are what an inspector will look for.
Documentation and marking
Heat numbers must be legible and traceable to the certificate. Where material is cut on site, marking transfer procedures should be agreed in advance.
EN 10204 3.1 is the usual minimum; 3.2 certification requires an independent inspector and should be identified at enquiry stage because it affects cost and schedule.
